Conquer Toxic Ambition: From Burnout to Belonging
How do you pause, rest, and recharge to maintain the stamina to keep going?
When and how do I pause, rest, and recharge to maintain the stamina to keep going?
This question is one that often arises for me. If I'm honest, I often brush it off, saying, "I can pause, rest, and recharge after [insert task, project, etc.]"
My behavior deprioritized my health and well-being. Instead, work was my primary, and often sole priority. Spoiler alert, I experienced burnout.
Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress.
To overcome burnout, I reached out to my inner circle for advice to help treat burnout's underlying symptoms. I learned...
...I'm not alone.
In fact, this APA report found burnout and stress are at all-time highs across all professions, with DEI professionals disproportionately impacted.
In my quest to learn how to treat burnout, and support other people going through a similar experience, I revisited these Imagine Belonging shows:
McKensie Mack offered brilliant advice on how to maintain the stamina to keep going. The secret? Set professional boundaries.
Dr. Brad Shuck shared his original research on the workplace determinants of health and how they can prevent burnout and stress.
Simone Walsh urged DEI professionals to end the stigma, and begin talking about mental health, trauma, stress, and burnout at work.
From Burnout to Belonging
To bring a sense of belonging back into my work, I committed to prioritizing my health first. This includes more rest, boundary setting, and support.
To hold myself accountable, I created a client waitlist, delegated more work to my team, and truly prioritized rest and hobbies.
Honoring my commitments requires accountability, which is why I'm sharing here. If this message inspires you, please share yours here.
