Does Your Workplace Have Enough of the Most Valuable Currency? (Hint: It's Not $$$$)
Dr. Leticia Nieto, Author of Beyond Inclusion, Beyond Empowerment, shares her wisdom about how to conquer the enemy of trust, which is conflict avoidance at the Belonging Circle on Thursday, June 6.
On a subconscious level, each time you move throughout your workplace – virtually or in person - you likely ask yourself:
Am I safe, and do I trust those around me?
When safety is present, you are more likely to take interpersonal risks like asking for help, admitting to a mistake, and offering feedback free from negative consequences.
And when trust is present, you are more likely to take responsible risks. If these risks go sideways, trust offers an essential buffer to rebound and learn from them.
Belonging Foundations
Safety and trust are the foundations for building belonging at work. When they are present, you are more likely to feel seen, connected, and supported on the job.
Over the past decade, I have studied the belonging foundations to help leaders recognize belonging isn’t simply a byproduct of a successful business. Rather...
Belonging is the prerequisite for business success.
To build it, organizational leaders cannot afford to overlook the ultimate currency available to invest in building a belonging culture, and that currency is trust.
The Enemy of Trust
Yet, one of the biggest challenges that depletes trust-building efforts is conflict avoidance. Failing to work through conflict can further erode trust at work.
It’s for this reason that I’m excited to introduce you to Dr. Leticia Nieto’s wisdom about how to conquer the enemy of trust, which is conflict avoidance.
Dr. Nieto is the author of Beyond Inclusion and Beyond Empowerment, and she is one of our featured guest speakers appearing at our June 6th Belonging Circle.
The Belonging Circle
To get a flavor of what you’ll learn from Dr. Nieto at our next Belonging Circle, my team created this short reel from our interview:
Dr. Nieto shares many other effective trust-building skills during this interview that will help advance your workplace’s DEIB goals, without the backlash.
Developing these skills means you’re not just focused on your growth, but by building trust, you will also inspire your colleagues to develop these inclusion skills.
Here’s a sneak peek of more trust-building strategies Dr. Nieto shares:
Earn Employee Trust. Great leaders know they must earn their employees’ trust by first extending trust to them. This action requires taking responsible risks by extending decision-making authority, stretch assignments, and influence to those you lead because building trust is a two-way relationship.
Words to Action. As a leader, when you make a commitment to those on your team, your words alone aren’t enough. You must follow through with consistent action. Your consistency will help establish your legitimacy as a leader and help grow the trust your team has in you.
Transparent Communication. Your employees like to feel informed. They want to know what is going on in the organization and on the team. It’s for this reason that clear and frequent communication, including sharing what’s going on in the organization, will help grow your employees’ trust in your leadership.
