Unleash Your Inner Peacemaker at Work
Discover how connection and play can help build belonging at work with Diana Cutaia, Founder of Coaching Peace Consulting.
After delivering a recent keynote, an audience member asked, “Rhodes can you please restate how you define belonging at work?” Here’s how I responded:
When we feel seen, connected, supported, and proud that our values align with our workplace’s values, we are more likely to experience an emotional outcome of belonging. To build more belonging for everyone on the job, we must design targeted interventions for people and groups most likely to experience exclusion.
To successfully transform moments of exclusion into moments of belonging through targeted interventions, first, we must be willing to explore and appreciate the lived experiences of colleagues who frequently encounter exclusion.
Learning about another person’s experiences with exclusion encourages us to practice sonder, the realization that each random person you pass is living a life as vivid and complex as your own.
Sonder reminds us that each person’s lived experiences are shaped by their own ambitions, friends, fears, routines, joys, beliefs, and behaviors, and until we engage in a respectful dialogue…these lived experiences are 100% invisible to us.
When we practice sonder, we are invited to see the humanity in another person, even when we have different experiences of feeling belonging and exclusion at work. Practicing sonder helps us connect more deeply to those around us.
