Your Belonging Vision: A Reflection Activity
The actions that got you here to build belonging won’t satisfy what’s required to fully activate your vision for a healthier culture. This reflection activity can help!
Happy Holidays! Before celebrating the New year, I encourage you to consider the wisdom many visionary leaders embrace at this time of year:
What got you here, won’t get you there.
If you have a vision for building spaces of belonging at work, putting this wisdom into action will be a key ingredient to your future successes.
This wisdom offers an important reminder; doing the same thing over-and-over again, expecting to get a different result will likely lead to frustration with minimal impact.
While it may sound counterintuitive, you must look back, reflect, and recognize how you have arrived at this present moment to activate your vision for a belonging future.
The act of reflecting helps you assess if what you are doing today is moving you closer toward or further away from your vision for the future.
Your Belonging Vision
Reflecting on the past year helps clarify your belonging vision. This LinkedIn course offers a helpful framework to engage in this transformative work.
Much of what is included in this course is sourced from my newest book, Imagine Belonging. The book amplifies this culture transformation formula.
One of the core ingredients to achieving transformation is clarity. Clarifying your belonging vision renews a strong commitment to it, especially when there is pressure.
Without clarity and commitment, you may be tempted to quit. Given what’s on the line in the year ahead, we can’t afford for you to quit. You play a critical role.
You may engage in reflection activities during leadership retreats, at strategic planning meetings, in performance reviews, or during the budget process.
These examples amplify how employers of choice take the time required to reflect on their broader vision and how past actions were - or were not - in alignment with it.
The Power of Reflection
Reflection activities allow you to proactively course-correct. This means, if you’re straying too far from your vision, you have the opportunity to realign with it.
In a culture that demands maximized productivity, setting aside precious time to reflect on our recent past actions can feel inefficient and counterproductive to some.
Yet, investing this time can be one of the wisest investments you make. It identifies valuable lessons learned while amplifying successes and things to repeat in the future.
Reflection time highlights the words, actions, or behaviors you need to start doing, stop doing, or continue doing to align with your belonging vision.
A 2024 Reflection Exercise
At the end of the year, I encourage my clients to reflect on the past year’s lessons when it comes to building more spaces of safety, trust, and belonging at work.
I remind them that before we can boldly imagine the year ahead, and how to align with our belonging vision, we must first reflect on the recent past.
What has changed from a month ago, a year, or even a decade ago?
Given the importance of this work, I’ve developed the following resources to empower you to reflect on your 2024 accomplishments as well as the lessons you’ve learned.
These resources include:
Your Belonging Vision. Complete this reflection worksheet to help evaluate your progress on working toward activating your belonging vision.

Change is reversible. Transformation is permanent.

These reflection activities can help. They will help you imagine the future, remembering that the time is now to see what you can really do.
